What does the Bible say about the Third Temple?

The concept of a "Third Temple" in Jerusalem does not explicitly appear in the canonical texts of the Bible. The First and Second Temples, however, are well-documented. The First Temple, built by King Solomon, is detailed in 1 Kings and 2 Chronicles. The Second Temple, which was constructed after the return of the Jews from Babylonian exile, is mentioned in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah and was later expanded by Herod the Great.

The idea of a Third Temple comes primarily from interpretations of biblical prophecy and Jewish eschatology rather than direct biblical statements. Some scholars and religious groups see several prophecies in the Old Testament as suggesting the eventual reconstruction of the Temple:

Ezekiel’s Temple Vision: The most detailed prophetic vision that might imply a Third Temple is in Ezekiel chapters 40 to 48. Ezekiel describes a detailed vision of a future temple, which some interpret as a blueprint for a Third Temple that will be built in the messianic era. This vision includes specific measurements and the reinstatement of temple practices, though it differs significantly from descriptions of the First and Second Temples.

Daniel’s Prophecy: In Daniel 9:24-27, there is a prophecy about seventy weeks that has been interpreted by some as predicting events related to the destruction of the Second Temple and the eventual establishment of a righteous kingdom, which could include a new temple.

New Testament References: In the New Testament, there are indirect references that some interpret as alluding to a Third Temple. For instance, 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 mentions a "man of lawlessness" who will sit in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. Some have interpreted this as suggesting a future temple from which this figure will operate.

The idea of the Third Temple is a more popular topic in Jewish and Christian eschatological beliefs rather than being a subject of direct scriptural instruction. According to Jewish tradition, the construction of the Third Temple is often associated with the arrival of the Messiah and the complete restoration of Israel. In some Christian eschatological views, particularly in dispensationalist theology, the reconstruction of the Temple is linked to the fulfillment of end-time prophecy. These interpretations are not universally accepted and remain a topic of theological debate and speculation.

2 Thessalonians 2:1-17 - Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. Daniel 11:31 - Forces from him shall appear and profane the temple and fortress, and shall take away the regular burnt offering. And they shall set up the abomination that makes desolate.

Revelation 11:1-2 - Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, “Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months.

Isaiah 11

Revelation 11

1 I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers.
2 But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for 42 months.
3 And I will appoint my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.”
4 They are “the two olive trees” and the two lampstands, and “they stand before the Lord of the earth.”

12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” And they went up to heaven in a cloud, while their enemies looked on.
13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.
14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.
15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever.”
16 And the twenty-four elders, who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God,

Matthew 24

1 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings.

24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
25 See, I have told you ahead of time.
26 “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it.
27 For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.
29 “Immediately after the distress of those days “ ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’
30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earthwill mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.
31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.
33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that itis near, right at the door.
34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.
35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,but only the Father.
